Urgent Care or the ER?

When urgent care can save you an ER bill — and when to go to the ER first.

Go to the ER or Call 911 For

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Signs of a stroke: face drooping, arm or leg weakness, slurred speech, sudden confusion or vision loss
  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • Bleeding that won't stop with pressure
  • Serious injuries, such as a bone pushing through the skin, an obviously deformed limb or a major car crash
  • Any head injury with loss of consciousness, confusion, repeated vomiting or a severe headache
  • Seizures or fainting
  • Severe allergic reactions with swelling of the face, lips or throat
  • Sudden, severe pain anywhere, including the head or abdomen
  • Thoughts of harming yourself — call or text 988 any time
  • Any symptom that is severe, getting worse quickly, or worries you

When in doubt, go to the ER first. Don't wait to see whether a worrying symptom improves.
